Every January since we met, Ryan and I send a card to the people in our lives who made an impact. And as we hit January 2019, we are sending our 4th batch of New Year's card.
Each year, I carefully create them myself, with the help my questionable graphic design skills and a good dose of my even more questionable sense of humor.
It all started by accident at the end of 2015, and I kept it on as a tradition over the course of the soon 4 years since we started our little adventure.
Here is how it went.
2016
I had no idea that this would be our first of our series of New Year's card.
Back in December 2015, Ryan had been dating for less than a year and had come up with what at that time felt like a crazy idea: we were going to quit our jobs, sell my apartment, buy a boat and go sail the world.
I had just opened our Instagram account ahead of our trip to Gibraltar (where we were going to learn how to sail). At that time, Ryan had just moved into my apartment, and we took this photo in my bathroom.
Back then, I did not own a camera and I couldn't take a decent photo, but we did spend a fair amount of time composing the shot.
2017
In December of 2016, our plans had become very real. We had not only completed our RYA Day Skipper course, but we also had bought our beloved boat, Polar Seal, and sold my apartment.
The once "crazy idea" had become our new reality, and we were now quite committed. So it felt right to step-up my card game (terrible pun intended), and I invested in having it printed and sent to actual people.
As you may or may not know, our first season was quite the trauma, which is accurately depicted on our 2017 New Year's card.
This photo was taken during my 30th birthday party. I had rented a reception room on an old 1930ies cruise ship in Stockholm, and the party theme was "The Love Boat" ( it is during this party that my friend offered me the Canon EOS 70D that I have been using to document our sailing adventure ever since. Thank you,
I believe that this picture still very much represents how Ryan and I go through life.
2018
At the end of 2017, we had both quit our jobs and made the decision to leave the dock, which was the theme of our 2018 New Year's card.
I upgraded the card and created a fancy design on a two-sided folded card with added details.
Although I hadn't quite figured out how it worked yet how my camera worked, I was happily starting to play with photography.
At this point, you are all aware of the fact that we managed to actually take off, leading us to:
2019
A few of you reading this blog post are about to receive our 2019 New Year's card, and we would like to keep it somewhat of a surprise. So if you would like, we would love to personally send you the 2019 issue of Ryan & Sophie wishing you a happy new year while goofing around on their sailboat.
This is the perfect opportunity to introduce you to our e-newsletter!!!
I have been thinking for a long time about how I could create a little group of insiders who we could communicate
My thought is to send weekly updates of where we are and what we are up to in real time, as well as links to the week's video and blog article(s), much as we would do with friends or family.
The irony is, I actually started this year by unsubscribing to ALL the newsletters that pollute my inbox. The e-mails we want to send are meant to be fun, so:
1/ If you do not see any value in getting real-time news and links to our latest photos and videos, do not subscribe. I thoroughly dislike the thought of polluting your inbox.
2/ I empathize with anyone who doesn't want yet another e-mail in their inbox, so really, no offense taken if you want to unsubscribe.
If you still like the thought of receiving e-mails from us, get real-time updates and never miss a thing, welcome to subscribe to our e-postcard below! :)
