# 78 Upgrading to silicone antifouling

Ask any cruisers out there, antifouling is NOT a fun job and cleaning your hull every week while on anchor can be a real pain (a friend of ours actually ended up with a small crab in his ear while doing it).

One dirty secret of the boating industry is that traditional antifouling is also really bad for the environment. And while paint available to pleasure craft is getting less toxic due to regulations, it is also getting less efficient.

So after a whole bunch of research, Ryan decided that we were going to go a different route for our anti-fouling. He purchased cans of Hempel Silic - One, a silicone based antifouling. While traditional antifouling uses biocides to kill anything that would attach to it, silicone antifouling creates a slick surface that prevents barnacle from attach and growing on the hull.

We sanded the boat, and started by applying an epoxy barrier called “silic seal”, went on to apply a tie coat to create a bond between the seal and the silicone paint, and finished with two coats of black Silic One.
