landfall in horta

On July 12th 2021, we made landfall in Horta after 16 days at sea from Bermuda, and an almost two months voyage from Bonaire.

You may have seen the videos of our landfall and the time we spent exploring, but I also wanted to share with you a couple of photos that to us, represent the last moments we spent at sea before reconnecting with civilization.

Our last sunrise at sea for a little while. Even though we are all looking forward to set foot on terra firma, we will all miss those moments and treasures the memories forever.

We did not manage to catch any fish on our passages between Bonaire and Horta. I had five more hours to try my luck, and I was not gonna let the chance go.

Unfortunately, though, we arrived empty-handed. The views made up for it.

Arriving to a new place by the sea gives you an absolutely unique perspective on the island or country you are about the enter.

We first notice the nature of the landscape. Is it hilly? cliffs? Green? Arid? Is it mountainous or flat?

The island of Faial is unlike anything we have seen before, with dramatic cliffs that have been carved by the waves for centuries, and green lush fields separated by rows of hydrangeas.

Oftentimes when we enter an archipelago, it can be difficult to distinguish one island from the other. It took us a while to figure out that what we saw was Mount Pico (in the back of the picture) and that it was actually on a different island.

And all of a sudden, we saw a city... and it was time for us to get back to civilization

A few hours later, we were joined by our friends on Zanzibar, who we had followed across the ocean, before ruthlessly passing them in the middle of the night before making landfall ;)

It took us two days before we could finally celebrate together (hello quarantine!) but we still danced together on the foredecks of our respective boats :p
