Sailing to historic Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Come to Lunenburg with us!

Polar Seal is surrounded by fog for days, but it suddenly lifts, revealing the beautiful colourful buildings of the harbor. Due to the foggy and cloudy weather, it was hard to use the watermaker or sail on the way here, so we need to fill up on water and refuel. We team up with our friend Andy Schell to get both at the dock. We also get to leave Polar Seal tied up for a while, so we manage to make a quick trip to the grocery store. Once our galley is stocked up, we’re ready to pick up the morning ball again.

Keep watching to admire the Blue Nose; the majestic ship engraved on the Canadian dime. We manage to film the crew skilfully mooring this 140ft-long vessel in Lunenburg Harbor - and feel somewhat inadequate, given that we sometimes struggle to moor our bowthruster-equippped 40ft sailboat…! To be fair, Barns can’t throw a line, so we do OK for a two-person crew.

In this video, you also get to watch us do laundry! Yeah, that might sound boring, but it’s a big thing when you sail full-time, especially as we get to finally wash our sheets here. Yay. Don’t worry though - we leave the laundry and head to town to taste some amazing local specialties - scallops and chips AND lobster rolls. Even Ryan, who isn’t a big seafood guy, thinks they’re really good.

Once the rain and fog give Lunenburg a break, we get to see how incredible the harbor and city look. It’s truly gorgeous and worth the wait - I realized that sometimes you need to give a place (or a person!) enough time to reveal their best self. The fast pace of life most of us inflict upon ourselves doesn’t allow us to take that time, so we just move on. This is why we decided to make this sailing season the slowest ever.
