The Truth about Working while Sailing the World

This week, we bring you a different episode. One day, on passage, I was working down below, while Ryan took a work phone call at the helm. That’s when I started wondering if we’ve been working a little too much…

So in this episode we’re in Boston, in the cheapest marina we could find, because Ryan needs to fly to get to a work meeting - again. He’s goes to Seattle and back in less than 58 hours. In the meantime, I’m on Polar Seal, rocking like there’s no tomorrow, trying to get some work done.

We’re feeling pretty stressed - we both have work, YT videos to release, and we’re on a sailing schedule (trust me - never do that!). We need to make it to New York within nine days, but I have a ton of work I need to do this week, so we decide there’s no other option than staying in Boston for longer. But I can’t get my work done at this super rolly marina (I was getting seasick at the dock!), so we move to a better-protected one.

That evening, we find a super lovely surprise left by a follower on Polar Seal’s deck - it’s extra delicious cannoli! It was exactly what my soul needed after waking up at silly am to deliver a 4-hour online training. Thank you so much!

Once I get (most of) my work done, we’re ready to set sail to New Shoreham (Rhode Island). But leaving the dock isn’t straightforward. We need to avoid bumping into a big catamaran and a very old and expensive motorboat. We spring off the bow and thankfully it all goes smoothly. Once we’re underway, it’s time to get ready for a work phone call. Thanks to Ryan’s excellent helming, we manage to catch the tide at the perfect time and make it through the Cape Cod Canal. Yay.

So what’s the reality of working full-time from a sailboat? It’s a balancing act! You still get to experience the rat race a little bit, unless you’re a trust fund baby or you have saved for many years. With that said, I wouldn’t trade it for ANYTHING IN THE WORLD.

I’m so grateful six years ago Ryan and I took a chance and got to create this life for ourselves, where we both have work we are passionate about and we get to experience the world by sailboat. It’s truly rewarding. But sometimes it’s a little stressful.
