BOAT TOUR: Meet Polar Seal - again!
Meet Polar Seal - again! A lot has changed since we shot our last boat tour video. In this episode, we take a look at all the gear that’s on board and we discuss why we decided to upgrade certain things.
On the bow, we have a 25kg Rocna anchor and 300ft (100m) of chain - no rod. It has never let us down. We feel 100% safe in any weather anchored with this setup.
For sails, we have a big dacron mainsail with single line reef and stackpack, which can act as a storm sail if we need to. For headsails we have a 100% jib and a 40% Genoa. Finally, we have an asymmetric spinnaker and a storm sail packed away.
We sail a lot downwind because it’s our favorite point of sail (duh!), so to avoid accidentally jibing we installed a boom preventer - a piece of dyneema connected to a boom-preventing line, so we never have to go further than the mast when we go on deck to tend to it.
In the cockpit, we have sprayhood, bimini and full enclosure for bad weather, which we have sailed in a lot lately. We never regretted investing in it. We can close it up and turn on the diesel heater on on cold passages and in the winter. It’s great because it adds an extra cabin to Polar Seal. 100% recommended. The twin helms open up the cockpit, which accommodates a big table for up to 10 people. We love to have mini parties on board.
At the back of the cockpit, there’s our solar arch, which is fully integrated in the pushpit. It carries 680watts of solar panels and davets to lift the dinghy in and out of the water easily. Our dinghy is a Takacat 380 Sports, which is an inflatable catamaran. It packs really small and light and is very stable - we love it!.
Inside, we have a decent-size salon and a big galley. This is where we work, eat, cook, watch TV, and relax. Around it, there are a v-berth, a tiny heads, and a large aft cabin. We use the v-berth as storage and the aft cabin as our berth, unless we have guests on board.
