Preparing for Bigger Adventures: A Life Update

Hello, hi, hi. Oh hi. Long time no see! Sorry about the video silence. It’s been a busy few months. In this episode, we share what we’ve been up to and our plans for the near future.

First, we go on a motor sail (no wind - story of our lives!) in the Chesapeake Bay, so we get to admire Eastport (Annapolis, MD) from the sea. It’s a gray day, so don’t expect any tropical beaches. We take Ryan’s parents on the sail - they’re in town to help us with some projects…

But let me catch you up.

Over the last month we have traveled across Europe for work and to go my grandma’s 90th birthday party. It was a blast, but we were on a tight schedule, having to attend work meetings and conventions in Sweden and Belgium.

At the same time, Ryan’s been working on a massive project of life-changing proportions. This is the project that could allow us to buy Polar Seal II! So it’s pretty important. Of course, he’s poured his soul into it. He often needs to travel at the last minute to different places, which means being close to an airport at all times.

So we decided to take a (short!) break on land. We’ve done this before staying in vacation homes and AirBnbs, but we got tired of it - my back can’t take short-term rentals beds anymore. I’m 37 years old, after all.

We had to establish a home base in the US because:

  • we need to be based in the US for the foreseeable future, since I got my Green Card

  • we want to reach more adventurous destinations, like Greenland, Patagonia and Japan

  • we need to make more money because we want to buy a bigger boat.

So we decided to lease an apartment in Annapolis for 6 months. Having a base for the winter will allow us to double down on work. The place was completely empty, of course, so we furnished it with bits from Ikea and Facebook Marketplace. We added camping chairs and a huge TV Ryan got on Black Friday. It’s home! I have a huge office, a comfy bed, and a decent kitchen. More importantly, everything’s still, so I’m not seasick while I try to work!

Polar Seal isn’t for sale yet and we don’t know when we’ll be able to plan for boat number two, but we still have lots of sailing plans to share with you. We’ll reveal more in the next episode.

Happy holidays!
